Why PVC, and why it fails
PVC is rigid, doesn’t rust, is easy to work with, and holds far more pressure than the city will ever feed your house — which is why it’s the standard for outdoor irrigation. In Arizona, the vast majority of grass sprinkler systems (around 95%) are run in PVC. Drip systems usually use black flexible tubing, but they can be run in PVC as well. Over time, PVC can crack or break for a few common reasons:
- Tree roots pushing against the line
- A shovel or pick strike while digging
- An improper install angle for the fittings used
